Hospice - Considered to be the model for quality, compassionate care for people facing a life- limiting illness or injury, hospice care involves a team-oriented approach to expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the person’s needs and wishes. Support is provided to the person's loved ones as well.
The focus of hospice relies on the belief that each of us has the right to die pain-free and with dignity, and that our loved ones will receive the necessary support to allow us to do so.
Palliative Care - Palliative care is a special type of service that addresses the pain, symptoms and stress that can accompany serious illness. Expert treatment of pain and symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, depression and anxiety can help keep patients as comfortable and active as possible so they can pursue meaningful daily activities. Palliative care can help a patient at any stage of a serious illness. It is best introduced early in the plan of care, but can be received at any time before, during, and after curative treatment.
The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) provides the following information on hospice and palliative care services.
